During the race, the veteran cyclist reached an emotional high point as his diehard fans came on the Petit Ballon climb to see their ever-relatable hero. Now, It will be one last dance for the Frenchman at the Race of the Falling Leaves, ending a career that many have followed so intently.

Pinot, a veteran athlete, has been in the game for over 14 years. After his final race, Pinot’s team released an emotional video to honor the legend. Pinot’s long-term boss Marc Madiot spoke with a heavy heart, describing Pinot’s connection with the fans. He claimed that the day he witnessed their communication, he had “lived an unreal day.”  Madiot also stated how Il Lombardia, Pinot’s final race, would be a different affair. He added that it would still be significantly important to be present for the last moments of his career.

“There will be other emotions in Lombardy, but it will be different,” said an emotional Madiot. “I think that… I don’t really want to know what it will be like. I just want to be there, that’s all. I want to be there for the ‘last bib’ because I know what it means,” he added. Madiot also said that all of Pinot’s supporters had “the pleasure of experiencing great and beautiful emotions.”

Pinot has had an esteemed career with iconic highs and lows. The highs include multiple France stage wins where he conquered Alpe d’Huez and the Col du Tourmalet. However, his later career was marred by injuries forcing him out of successive Tours. However, this was shadowed by a Monument triumph in Lombardia itself in 2018.

Madiot is seemingly looking forward to good and beautiful moments in Lombardy. “To be present at Lombardy is to bring a beautiful image to an end. We’re here to celebrate, we’re here together,” he added. The same fans that lined the Petit Ballon for Pinot will meet him again on the route from Como to Bergamo. They have planned to send Pinot off to retirement together. Originally, the meeting at Petit Ballon was their final dance with Pinot, but it went so well that they followed him to Lombardy.

We had this plan in mind since the announcement of the retirement of Thibaut,” said Humbert, a founder of the Collectif Ultras Pinot (CUP). He also explained that the ultras would like to send Pinot off with a band, including festive celebrations and firecrackers. Humbert expects “a few hundred” people to line up at Pinot’s farewell. While the fans won’t care too much about Pinot’s performance, they will be rooting for him to win exquisitely.
